Masterpost | Day 8
In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
At first I was going to talk about a movie (
Memento by Christopher Nolan) because it's one of my all-time favorite movies that I watched several time but I changed my mind. Instead, I'm going to talk comics, and one in particular: SODA.
SODA (
Wikipedia) is the story of David Solomon (So-Da), a NYC cop who lives with his mother, Mary. She doesn't know he's a cop, and he does everything to hide it from her because of her weak heart (and the fact that her late husband was Sheriff and was killed on the job). She thinks he's a priest.
( Cover )I love this comic book. I read almost all the volumes several times. It's part of my childhood/teenage years comics. The situation is ridiculous: a cop disguising himself as a priest to avoid upsetting his mother. The whole city knows Soda isn't a priest but his mother is still oblivious. The character, Soda, is smart, kinda lonely cowboy, and a crack shot. I love all the characters, qualities and flaws.
Favourite volumes: - Lettres à Satan (Letters to Satan)
In this volume, Soda reveals why he started disguising as a priest. I love this volume because you learn a lot about Soda's past when he first arrives in NYC. It's a mix of thriller/horror, quite dark for the series but awesome.
- Dieu est mort ce soir (God Has Died Tonight)
This was the first volume I've read of this comic series. My mom had only bought from the 4th one (she probably borrowed the first 3 from the library). In this volume, a hitman is on the loose in NYC, his next victim is shown on a 100-dollar bill. Soda must find him before the hitman does. All the victims are linked to one person, nicknamed "God." The whole volume is a race against time and it's absolutely thrilling. You see Soda's badassery and there are a few scenes in this that I love and could reread a hundred times.
- Et délivre-nous du mal (And Deliver Us from Evil)
In this volume, Soda and his mom go back to their hometown, Providence, Arizona. There, Soda learns more about his father than he thought. What I love here is Soda finally learning what happened when his father died and why it happened. You can see he's really not over it, and his mother is still heartbroken and you just feel for them (and then the action arrives and the truth is revealed... well, only to Soda.)
Note: I think Soda is my first fictional crush. For real.
