Masterpost | Challenge #13 & 14

Challenge #13

In your own space, tell us about 3 fandom resources you use or enjoy. (One or two is fine, especially if you're in a smaller fandom!) Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Apart from the wikis on fandom.com, I don't think I use anything else. It seems I don't use a lot of fandom resources, haha.

Challenge #14

In your own space, remix an existing work into a new media, and/or rec three or more remixes that do the same. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

OK, for this one, I'm going to self-rec:

Art for Hollow Earth: I created this fanart for a French fanfic (for the short-lived French Big Bang). I'm especially proud of Dean's poster, still today.

Art for Blind Man's Bluff: Created for the WIP BB 2017. I loved how the playing cards turned out. They are my favorite pieces.

Art for Poseidon's Champion: Created for the Small Fandom Bang round 7. I had so much fun trying to recreate the Ancient Greek amphora!

The last one isn't a self rec. It's one of the best thing I've ever received. Remember my fanfic Interlude? I wrote it for the WIP BB 2017, and I was lucky to receive art for it. It's so great! Please look at what kuwlshadow did!

Masterpost | Challenge #6

In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Here are my recs (all AUs incidentally)

I Am the Night by gottalovev
Fandom: The Avengers - All Media Types
Relationships: Steve/Tony
Summary: That's it. Tony is doomed. He rolls on his back, crosses his wings over his belly and closes his eyes. He'll await death here, misunderstood by the world to the bitter end.
Reason why it is recced:
This fanfic is just too cute for words. Tiny bat!Tony is overdramatic but so cute. I want to hug him.

And When You Smile (The Whole World Stops and Stares For a While) by Iggysassou
Fandom: MCU
Relationships: Steve/Tony
Summary: Tony winced as the baby in his arms let out another deafening scream, earning several disapproving frowns and a few sympathetic wince from nearby passengers.

Of all the days for his car to break down and Happy to be on holiday, it had to be the day Peter was throwing the biggest, loudest tantrum in his (albeit short) life. And as if it wasn’t bad enough, Tony hadn’t been able to get a taxi so they were riding a bus home. It was a supposed to be a short ride according to his phone but of course there was traffic because it was both raining and rush hour and Tony felt very much like crying as Peter let out another wail.
Reason why it is recced:
I looooove Superfamily, so this is catnip for me.

In Hindsight by nanasekei
Fandom: MCU
Relationships: Steve/Tony
Summary: Tony Stark knows very well how he screwed things up with Steve Rogers. He remembers it. Perfectly.
...Doesn't he?
Reason why it is recced: I really, really loved this fanfic. Tony's pov is heartbreaking but hopeful at the same time. And the writing is just wonderful.

I'm not reccing an icon maker instead of fanworks because everything they do is wonderful, please look at what [personal profile] magicrubbish does with icons.
I'm also a fan of this icon set from [personal profile] aliensamba (Riddick <3) and this icon set from [community profile] shahallim (The Last of Us, Part 2).

Masterpost | Day 9

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I almost put a fic a I already recced last year. I'm only going to focus on 2017, and luckily, I have quite the choice. :)

Remember when I talked about that comment that almost made me cry? Well, that was for this fanfic:

Interlude (11930 words)
Fandom: Supernatural, The Amazing Spider-Man (Movies - Webb)

Rating, Charaters and Summary )

Like I said on that post: I started to write in 2015, and only finished it last year (thought it was supposed to be longer but DEADLINES). It's my longest work in English ever (as a secondary language) and it received more success that I'd ever imagine (16 kudos is wow for this)! I mean it's about a weird crossover pairing nobody ever heard/thought of/written about. So, yeah, I didn't expect much. I'm proud of what I accomplished, and it gave me back my confidence about my ability to tell a story in English.
*
Staying in familiar territory, the next rec is:

A Rather Peculiar Number (1844 words)
Fandom: Person of Interest (TV), Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

Rating, Charaters and Summary )
I love crossovers, and last year I had the pleasure to participate in the Crossovering Exchange. I wrote three fanfics for this challenge: the mandatory one, a pinch hit and a treat. This fic is the treat. The prompt caught my eyes the first time, but I didn't get it. Every time I'd come back on AO3 to look at the challenge page, it would always jump at me. So when I finished writing the pinch hit, and realized I had like 1 day left in the challenge, I just told myself "Just do it even if you don't finish it in time."
I started writing at probably 10 a.m. and published around 9 p.m. (while doing other things). It's not perfect, I see the flaws but I was so pumped during the writing process that I didn't/don't really care. I hadn't felt this feeling for some time. It was fun.
*
I rec this fanfic not for writing reason:

Give, Earn, Keep (2585 words)
Fandom: Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Marvel Cinematic Universe

Rating, Charaters and Summary )

This little nugget has nothing special. It's not that original or well-written. I'm reccing this fic for the fandom, particularly the "Tony & Peter" part with all the dad!feels and kid!spider. They are just phenomenal. They are all kind, enthusiastic and... it feels nice to be around them. Seriously. I'm not really part of fandoms anymore because of all the negativity I felt at the time. The only way I interact with others is through fanfics basically. What a surprise to fall in that small part of the giant MCU (and more generally Marvel) fandom. Every time I post a fanfic with Tony & Peter, they send a mountain of love. They're just great.
*
And lastly, though, only French-speakers be would able to understand:

[PODFIC] A coeur ouvert (10 words)
Fandom: Supernatural
Rating, Charaters and Summary )

First podfic ever. It was fun and exhausting and scary but I keep a really good memory of that process. I spent a whole weekend recording, rerecording and editing. It's weird to hear your own voice until you don't even recognise it. I made mistakes, it's not loud enough, I should've prepared more but I'm really proud of what I did. I'd like to do it again, but I need to set a time and just commit otherwise I'll never do it.

(There's also the fact that my writing is finally back in full swing and I don't want to lose it again)

Masterpost | Day 8

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

At first I was going to talk about a movie (Memento by Christopher Nolan) because it's one of my all-time favorite movies that I watched several time but I changed my mind. Instead, I'm going to talk comics, and one in particular: SODA.

SODA (Wikipedia) is the story of David Solomon (So-Da), a NYC cop who lives with his mother, Mary. She doesn't know he's a cop, and he does everything to hide it from her because of her weak heart (and the fact that her late husband was Sheriff and was killed on the job). She thinks he's a priest.

Cover )

I love this comic book. I read almost all the volumes several times. It's part of my childhood/teenage years comics. The situation is ridiculous: a cop disguising himself as a priest to avoid upsetting his mother. The whole city knows Soda isn't a priest but his mother is still oblivious. The character, Soda, is smart, kinda lonely cowboy, and a crack shot. I love all the characters, qualities and flaws.

Favourite volumes:
  • Lettres à Satan (Letters to Satan)
In this volume, Soda reveals why he started disguising as a priest. I love this volume because you learn a lot about Soda's past when he first arrives in NYC. It's a mix of thriller/horror, quite dark for the series but awesome.
  • Dieu est mort ce soir (God Has Died Tonight)
This was the first volume I've read of this comic series. My mom had only bought from the 4th one (she probably borrowed the first 3 from the library). In this volume, a hitman is on the loose in NYC, his next victim is shown on a 100-dollar bill. Soda must find him before the hitman does. All the victims are linked to one person, nicknamed "God." The whole volume is a race against time and it's absolutely thrilling. You see Soda's badassery and there are a few scenes in this that I love and could reread a hundred times.
  • Et délivre-nous du mal (And Deliver Us from Evil)
In this volume, Soda and his mom go back to their hometown, Providence, Arizona. There, Soda learns more about his father than he thought. What I love here is Soda finally learning what happened when his father died and why it happened. You can see he's really not over it, and his mother is still heartbroken and you just feel for them (and then the action arrives and the truth is revealed... well, only to Soda.)

Note: I think Soda is my first fictional crush. For real.

Masterpost | Day 5

Recommend a fannish or creative resource. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Reading the comments helped me find what to rec.

Best resources for me: There are others that I'm forgetting. French Canadians also have GREAT resources on the French language.

I only found this subreddit recently but it's absolutely amazing if you need ideas or writing prompts.

Now, onto "Free" pictures: DesignerPics, Pexels, Gratisography. All the pictures are under the Creative Commons Zero (CC0) license.

My main Photoshop resources: yeahps (tutorials, tools, resources, etc.), FontSquirrel (fonts), Freepik (textures), Brusheezy (brushes).
In French, Collectif Team8 has great tutorials (free and premium).

Screen capture resources: Home of the Nutty, Screencapped, KissThemGoodbye.

Sorry for all these links, I went a little overboard.

Masterpost | Day 2

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Last year I talked about the first comment I ever received on one of my first fanfics, so I think I'm going to talk about one of the comments I received this year. This comment was actually the best I ever received. The reviewer commented on my writing, on the plot, on the characterization (it was a really long comment), and I was kinda "scared" of reading it (I didn't think it was a nice comment).

Boy, was I wrong. It was one of the best read I've ever had, it made me giddy, love bursting for this lovely person. Basically, it was just nice things about the fic.

It touched me deeply, more than I thought, for a few reasons: 1) it's about a niche crossover ship, 2) it's a fic I started in 2015 and finally (sort of) finished it last year, 3) it's almost 12k in English (I'm not an English-speaker).

This was the longest text I've ever written in English, and I'm proud of it. But the commenter hit all of my insecurities on this work and just made me feel better about it. I think I spent just an hour rereading it, thinking how to answer in a way that translates what their comment meant.

Day 3

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Unfortunately, I forgot to keep my delicious updated so all the things I saw/read last year are kind of lost.
1) A fanvid Marvel: The War was in Color. This is one of my favourite fanvids ever.

Watch the fanvid! )

2) The Killing Game by kristen999, a Jessica Jones/Daredevil/The Punisher crossover fanfic.
New York becomes a hunting ground and the only thing that can prevent further bloodshed is an alliance between The Devil’s of Hell’s Kitchen, Jessica Jones, and The Punisher.

3) Outta My Head (When You're Not Around) by ShadowsLament, a Matt Murdock/Frank Castle (Daredevil/The Punisher) fanfic. Takes place after The Punisher.
Frank wants the Devil on his side in a war against Jigsaw's operation.

4) Wishes and Lies by stellarose, a Daredevil/MCU crossover.
Post-Netflix Defenders. While recovering at the abbey, Matt receives an unexpected, though not entirely unwelcome visitor.

Day 4

In your own space, create a fannish wishlist. No limits on size or type of fanwork; just tell us what you’d like to see. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. And if you grant a wish, do the same thing!

I don't actually know... I mean a part from reading new fanfics or watching new fanvids, there's nothing specific I want right now. :)

Masterpost | Day 12

In your own space, post a rec for fannish spaces and resources - comms, challenges, twitters, tumblrs, etc. Tell us about where you hang out. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I don't really hang out much in fannish things anymore (apart from AO3), so it's a pretty small list.

[livejournal.com profile] wipbigbang: finish your fanfics with this bang!
I've known the bang for three years, but I only started participating as an artist in 2015. I’ve been meaning to participate as a writer as well but when I tried (last year), I failed spectacularly (dropped out two weeks in). But I did fanart for four writers in 2 rounds (2015 & 2016), and it’s always been a pleasure to work with them.
This bang is also a way for me to use a bit of my Photoshop skills that I don't really use as much as I would like.

[community profile] trope_bingo: I discovered it very recently (in July or August 2016).
What I love about this bingo are the tropes, obviously, and the fact that it's multifandom. It gave me the right incentive to write again: 5 (short) fanfics written in under 3 months (after 3 years of having difficulty to write). I don't have the same proficiency as before (my writing peak was 2007-2010. From 2011 on, it just trickled). So yeah, it was a good experience.

NaNoWriMo, not really fannish but super useful to me.
For those of you who don’t know NaNoWriMo, the principle is very simple: write 50k words in 30 days.
Originally, the challenge is held each November, but you can also participate to the Camps (April and July) where you can set a custom goal (instead of the original 50k).
I started participating to NaNoWriMo in 2010 and didn’t stop (except for two years where I failed epically/miserably).

I love NaNoWriMo because:

  • it makes me write 50k+ in 30 days (and it’s like my yearly quota for my writing so I don’t feel as guilty not writing the rest of the year)
  • the (French) community is awesome
  • I’ve written some my original ideas and it feels GREAT (though I didn’t finish any of them) (yet).
Since a couple of years, they also accept fanfictions ;) (and thesis, and scripts, and other stuff).

Yes, the challenge is about quantity, not quality. It can make people uncomfortable (you have to kill your inner editor), some might even despise it, but you could think of this challenge as a way to start good habits such as:

  • writing regularly
  • writing all the crappy things first in order to reveal the brilliant ideas hidden in your mind. :)
(at least, that's what I think ;))

It’s for people who plan very carefully their stories, have detailed character profiles, do research and have a solid plot (which has to be done before the actual challenge)

It’s for people who didn’t plan anything, have one or two characters, thought of a few scenes they want to write, and write as they go (which is perfectly fine to do that during the challenge).

Also, it’s very satisfying.

Day 5

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Let's go with my favorite fanfics of all time.

Masterpost | Day 2

In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Let's say, there are three works which changed my view of story-telling:
  • Stephen King's It: I loved the way he mixed past and present in the same paragraph, keeping me breathless for the next revelation.
  • Christopher Nolan's Memento: I loved the way, it almost feels like we're the character, as confused as he is. I can't get enough of this movie. I watched it 3 or 4 times, but every time I think about it, I just want to watch it again.
  • Anne Rice's Queen of the Damned: I should read it again, but at the time, this book hooked from beginning to end. Loved the way she could keep me wanted to know more about the vampires' origins.
Fandom wise, there are two fandoms which I still hold dear (more or less):
  • The manga Gravitation is the first work which really pulled me into fanfiction. This is the first fandom where I avidly read any fanfics, and wrote fanfics. I bought all the mangas, watched all the animes and OAVs, and even read some doujinshis.
  • Supernatural is a fandom I adore and hate. It pulled me further into fannish things, made me discovered awesome people and art, not only in fanfiction. But it also made me pulled out of it. Now, I don't really consider myself in the fandom, even though I still write fanfics about it.
