AO3 Link: Unexpected Outcome
Diana pushes the door open with the tip of her fingers, trying to repress her grimace of disgust as much as possible. As she steps inside the bar, the sole of shoes sticking to linoleum in a way that doesn’t feel sanitary, a hand shoots up above the crowd and waves wildly, quickly followed by a familiar face. Liza continues waving until Diana joins her table, which is sitting a bit too close to the stage to her taste.
“Hiiii, Diana! So glad you came! Maggie told you might, but she wasn’t sure.”
Liza is smiling bright and wide, a cocktail halfway done in hand.
“Yes. A bit last minute. I almost didn’t come.”
“Well, sit, sit. Josh and his band will be back soon.”
Liza taps on the seat beside her, and Diana looks to make sure it’s safe to sit on. Satisfied nothing strange will stain her very expensive dress, she stiffly sits and waits for a waiter to make eye contact with her to order a glass of wine (which isn’t that terrible, but she hates it on principle). Maggie isn’t here yet, and according to Liza, Kelsey had something else planned, so she’s stuck with a slightly tipsy Liza.
She whoops when her ex-boyfriend, Josh, and his bandmates come back on stage.
“We were supposed to have a singer with us for the second part of this set,” Josh announces with a sheepish smile. “But, unfortunately, she can’t get here in time.”
Some people boo here and there, making Diana roll her eyes.
“I know, I know, we’ve overstayed our welcome.” A flurry of laughs ripples through the public. He continues, lifting his hand to count with his fingers, “Here are your options: one, leave, two, one of us sing, three, improv.”
One of the musicians, wearing a beanie and a long beard, steps up to the mic to declare, “I wouldn’t recommend one of us sings.” We’re terrible.”
It makes the crowd laugh again. Liza suddenly grabs Diana’s arm tightly.
“You could sing!”
Before she can stop the unstoppable force that is Liza Miller, Diana watches in horror as she runs to the stage to grab Josh’s attention and expose her frankly terrible idea to her ex-boyfriend’s ear. Josh looks up and meets her eyes, and she knows deep inside that she’s doomed.
“Liza says you can sing,” Josh tells Diana, Liza nodding like a crazy person behind him.
“Liza Miller should mind her own business.”
A terrifying glint appears in Josh’s eyes and his mouth grows into a smirk. Diana feels herself straightening out as she faces the other man.
“Let’s talk, then. What can I do that would make you get on stage tonight?”
Diana doesn’t want anything from that man. If she wants something, she gets it, as easy as snapping her fingers. Probably seeing Josh won’t sway Diana like this, he beckons her to follow him near the stage.
“Look, I know Liza kinda threw you under the bus, so if you don’t want to do it, you can just say no. We’ll just do some improv instead.”
Josh seems sincere and Diana has to admit being a little surprised. She didn’t think he would be understanding. She looks back at Liza, who gives her two thumbs up. Sitting next to her is Maggie with a bemused look on her face. Filled with an unknown feeling and butterflies in her belly, she turns back to Josh.
“Let’s do it.”
Josh smiles and nods. Once they have decided which songs they would do, Diana follows Josh on stage.
“Alright, guys,” Josh says into the mic, “we do have a singer now, so we’re going to finish our set as announced. Please welcome Diana!”
He uses both his hands to show off Diana. She feels a little overdressed amid jeans and flannels, but the cheers and whistles from the crowd erase the discomfort.
They all get into place. The drummer counts to three and they are off. If Diana feels a little nervous at first, she quickly finds her footing and dives into her diva/theater kid persona. The crowd cheers. Liza dances, and Maggie smiles.
They do three other songs when Josh announces it’s the end of the set and the concert.
“That was great,” Josh says to her at the end, “Liza didn’t lie. You really know how to sing.”
“Thank you,” Diana replies.
“You know, we have gigs every week so if you want to get in sometime, let me know. You’re more than welcome to come back.”
Diana brushes her hair back correctly and replies, “I might take you up on that.”
“Awesome!”
Josh then grabs her in a hug, making her freeze, and turns around to help his bandmate put everything away.
“I didn’t know you could sing like this,” Maggie whispers in her ear.
Diana shivers. She didn’t hear her coming up behind her.
“There are a lot of things you don’t know about me.”
Maggie slowly smiles, then tilts her head towards the bar, “Let me buy you a drink then so I can learn more things about you.”
“Lead the way,” Diana replies with a smile of her own
